A former water-mill built  in the 17th century on the Molène, near Mont Saint - Michael and just minutes away from the Saint -Marlo and Dinan tourist sites,

Constructed in 1620 on the river Molene, its function was the milling of oats and barley for animal feed. Its name comes from a species of oak  called "Rouvre" which grows in the surrounding countryside.

The waters of the river Molene which were faster flowing in those days, powered the wheels of five or six watermills before joining the Biez-Jean River and emptying out into the bay of Mont Saint-Michel.

From 1900 onward its activity declined with the development of the large industrial mills. The farmers no longer came down the road to the little mill of the Rouvre. They now had their own grinding machines fashioned for their particular needs.

By 1914 there was no more grain to grind and the mill ceased working. A fire made it unusable.

History of Le Petit Moulin

For five years it lay abandoned until we bought it in 1968. It was then in a very poor state and we set about the task of restoration. Sadly none of the mill machinery remained, only the site of the mill wheel.

Originally back in 1620 the little mill was a simple construction and what was then the ground floor has now become the dining room.

In 1820 the centre section was extended to form a cow shed and a wood store. The cow shed is now the kitchen and in 1977 we converted the wood store into guest accommodation.

The mill pond was planned in 1970 in a meadow crossed by the River Molene, and completed with the building of a dam to hold the water.

In 1990 the guest capacity was further increased on the Eastern side by the building of four more rooms. This construction is of local oak.

In 1991 a new six metre diameter mill wheel was installed, turned by the waters of the River Molone. This was the culmination of all the years of planning and visits to other water mills which were still in working order.

In 1997 when we first opened, we welcomed a dozen families. Now we are full from  April to November with guests from all over the world.

Our family comes from the village of Saint Pierre de Plesguen.
