Information for Birdwatchers
Bird watchers will find good areas close to the house, we see Ospreys most years now, and we are very close to the bird and nature reserve at Egelton.
Rutland Water has S.S.S.I status and is renowned as one of the best places in the UK for bird watching. The British Bird watching Fair is held annually at Rutland and we are happy to take bookings for this prestigious event. The dates for 2004 are 20 - 21 - 22 August.
Another prestigious event, The Burghley Horse Trials, takes place on the 2nd - 5th September 2004.
Information for Fisherman
For the fisherman Rutland Water is world famous for the quality of it's trout fishing and whether the fish are obliging or infuriating you will always have a rewarding day from the bank or boat. You will find a good selection of angling books etc. and we've decorated one room with pictures, flies etc. with the angler in mind [we are all fishers in this house]. Just a short stroll away from the house are Barnsdale Road End, Barnsdale Creek, Steep Bank, Cardiac Hill, Dickinson's Bay, Burley Reach etc. all very good hot spots, and don't forget Tim Appleton's for the big Brownies! Rob, who fishes most days can usually let you know the latest method, flies or catching place, some days you can see fish rising from the house! We offer a drying room, freezer, a packed lunch and smoking facilities if required. All tackle and flies, from size 22 dries to some more elaborate concoctions, are available from the fishing lodge at Normanton.
Your host Rob Waddington is a keen fly fisherman with many years experience. Rob has travelled widely and has fished for Salmon in Scotland & Ireland for many years, more recently he has fished the Kola peninsular in Russia. His knowledge of Rutland Water will be a valuable reason to choose The Lodge for your stay in Rutland. We now offer fly fishing tuition and coaching for all ages and abilities, see our website at www.rutlandwaterflyfishing.co.uk for more information. An ideal introduction to this sport.
Activities
For Cyclists, the Rutland Water cycle path [18 or 26 mile circuits] passes our garden.
Water sports are well catered for at Whitwell, with sailing and windsurfing and there's the sailing club at Edith Weston on the south shore.
Places to visit
For general holidays, we are in the middle of one of the most beautiful areas of England.
The ancient county of Rutland is famous for it's rolling countryside, timeless villages with thatched cottages, village greens and traditional pubs. Visit the towns of Oakham and Uppingham, and the picturesque unspoilt villages of Hambleton, Wing, Exton, Braunston etc. and Stamford, a lovely old market town, is only a few miles away.
There are good places to eat close by:- The Finches in Hambleton for good food and a friendly atmosphere is highly recommended as are the White Horse at Empingham, the Noel Arms at Whitwell, Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, The Plough at Braunston and various restaurants and take-aways in Oakham.
