No Campo is the Portuguese word for 'outside', 'in the country'. Because of the tranquillity, the space and the beauty of this 'campo', in 1999 we purchased a farm with 4 hectares of land, just outside of Santa Margarida da Serra, with hundreds of cork-oaks, an olive-grove, a kitchen-garden and lots of fruit-trees. We planted subtropical trees and shrubs and converted the “monte”, the original farmstead in Alentejo-style, into one single guest-house. Not a resort, but one private accomodation just for you.

To the south of Lisbon, in the Alentejo, lies the Costa Azul. Near Grândola you will find no campo.

Accommodation

Two bedrooms:-  One with double bed, the other with two single beds. Crib for baby is available

The bathroom:- With shower, toilet, wash-hand basin with hot and cold running water.

The sitting-room:- Is L-shaped, with living and dining-recess. Equipped with colour television and radio/CD-player. On winter evenings the wood-stove gives welcoming warmth. The big windows command a stately view towards the South and West.

The kitchen:- Fully equipped  with all modern conveniences, like big fridge, gas-cooker, microwave-oven and coffee machine.

The terraces:- The French windows give immediate access to the terraces, where you will find garden chairs and a table, reclining-chairs and equipment for a BBQ.

From the southern terrace you have a view over the valley, where our goats pasture underneath the cork-oaks. When sitting on the other side of the guesthouse, in the shade of the vine-tendrils, you have a view of the olive-grove. Whether you prefer sun or shade, you will find it.

Around the area

No Campo lies in a protected nature reserve, inviting you to enjoy beautiful bike rides or for walking-tours, for instance down to the nearby river, or into the mountains, towards the summit where you find “A nossa Senhora da Penha,”, a rural chapel.

Information about bicycle- and walking-tours is awaiting you, the region is a pleasure-ground for mountain-bikers, with its seemingly endless dirt-roads without traffic. Although the terrain is quite hilly, summits are never over 250 metres. Or you just stay home and enjoy the campo, watch the birds including the hoopoe, the redheaded shrike and the bee-eater, or spot salamanders and lizards. Depending on the season, you can gather mushrooms and pick olives and wild marjoram (Oregano).

In the thinly inhabited province of Alentejo, 10 kilometres to the south of Grândola, lies the little village of Santa Margarida da Serra. A friendly mountain-village with low, white plastered cottages, surrounded by endless slopes strewn with thousands of cork-oaks. It is situated near the Atlantic coast, the Costa Azul, with its tranquil seaside resorts like Melides and Lagoa de Santo André. You can reach Santa Margarida by the A2 motorway from Lisbon airport in about an hour.
