Local Information

Bishop's Stortford is an old Hertfordshire market town dating back to Norman times.
The White Stag, is the town's mascot. He is now on view outside the local book shop.

In days gone by, the town belonged to the Bishop of London. It still has a number of old buildings, a castle mound and a magnificent church.

The town grew up around the River Stort from where it got its name.
There is a good range of shops and a weekly market which stretches from one end of the town to the other.

Facilities in the area

Visitors can enjoy going to the cinema, bowling, swimming etc and many restaurants.

The main line station provides fast trains (30 minutes) to London and Cambridge, both towns being about 25 miles away.

The area is surrounded by rural countryside and there are many pleasant walks along the river and around the villages.

The famous sculptor Henry Moore's exhibition garden is at nearby Perry Green.

Duxford Air Museum is a great day out. They have every aeroplane ever constructed and hold air shows regularly throughout the year.

Within 12 miles is Saffron Walden, another pretty market town famous for its saffron crocus and the English Heritage house-Audley End.
