Places to visit

Minchinhampton nestles in a hollow on the edge of 600 acres of common land. The village centre is built in natural stone and many properties still have tiled stone roofs. There is a 17th century market house where wool merchants used to purchase fleeces from local farmers. Cows and horses are free to roam from the common into the village allowing it to retain its rural charm and character.

Nearby are the small towns of Stroud, Nailsworth and Cirencester. Gloucester and Cheltenham are the nearest large towns and approximately 1 hour drive away are Bath, Oxford and Stratford upon Avon.

Local recreation amenities include three golf courses, riding stables and gliding. The Cotswold Water Park at Cirencester provides most water sports and Stroud boasts a well-equipped leisure centre, within Stratford Park, that offers indoor and outdoor facilities.

Nature lovers can visit the Wildfowl Trust, Prinknash Bird Park and Cotswold Farm Park or just enjoy walks at one of the Cotswolds escarpment vantage points with breathtaking views across the Severn Valley.

John has extensive local knowledge and will be happy to help you plan trips and point you in the right direction for your evening meal.

Golf

Minchinhampton Golf Club, which was founded in 1889, comprises three golf courses, each of quite different character. The Old Course, on Minchinhampton Common, provides a good test, with some particularly excellent par 3s, and is situated on common land between Stroud and Minchinhampton. The Old Course offers traditional golf with a newly refurbished modern clubhouse.

The two new courses, Avening and Cherington, are situated to the east of Minchinhampton, near to Hyde Wood House, on the road to Avening and provide testing golf, be it on the Avening Course with its park land style, or on the Cherington which has more of a links feel about it. Here, one course is designated as a two ball course and the other a three/four ball course on any particular day.
