Cotterill Farm Cottages

Self-Catering Holiday Cottages in the Peak District National Park, England

High quality vacation rental accommodation in a beautiful area of England.

Four award winning fully equipped stone cottages, sleeping 2 and 4; notwithstanding consistent grading of 4 Stars, extensively upgraded kitchens and bathrooms within last year.

Wonderful location with two wild flower meadows one of which borders a nature reserve leading to the Rive Dove. One mile downstream is Dove Dale.

The cottages have superb views over dales and hills, yet we are only 400 yards to village and pub. Footpaths surround our property, and there are three (cycle) trails within three miles. We are in the heart of the White Peak, surrounded by attractions of all kinds on all sides!

The Dairy - a Cottage for Two People

This cottage has a large sized bathroom with Italian floor tiles, containing five piece suite (separate shower cubicle and bidet), and a similarly well equipped kitchen. Above these two rooms is a good sized galleried bedroom, which overlooks a large open plan lounge (twenty feet by twenty feet), rising to the rafters.

The floor of the lounge is polished stone flags (with quality rugs in appropriate places) and a log burner on a stone plinth is a focal feature in the middle of the room. Some of the stone walls are exposed, as are the extensive wood beams.

interior of the dairy

The tastefully co-ordinated furniture and furnishings are of a high standard, including a leather Chesterfield suite and an Irish dresser (similar to a Welsh one). Most of the crockery is china.

The galleried bedroom has a polished wooden floor, the stain for which contrasts well with the stain of the wooden open tread stairs. The rugs on the stone and pine floor blend in well.

This has often been described by our guests as being a 'second honeymoon cottage'.  There is a private patio area in front of the cottage with superb views, similar in fact to that on the aerial view below

Dale View - Four Person Cottages

dale view interior

This cottage has an upstairs lounge (featuring a substantial old exposed beam seen on picture below) and kitchen area to take advantage of the views. The television is a wall hanging LCD type, and there is a coal effect stove to provide more flexibility with heating.

The bedrooms and shower room (with a seat inside the cubicle) are on the ground floor. There are two means of entry and exit, on the ground floor or up attractive external stone steps to the living area. There is a second TV in the twin bedroom.

Cotterill Farm Barn

This detached cottage stands separate from our other three cottages and the land on which the cottage stands together with parking area and a grassed area is surrounded  within its boundaries by a dry stone wall, offering total privacy.

The entrance hall opens into the hall way, off which are two bedrooms, one double with an en-suite shower room, and one twin. Upstairs is a second shower room, good sized lounge, with television and video, with both a leather Chesterfield Settee and also a further comfortable spacious L shaped settee (excellent for lounging on).

Also on the first floor is the dining area room and forming the second half of a 'L shape' is the well equipped kitchen, again with gloss work-tops, real stone granite sink and halogen cooker. Having been re-built with cavity walls, the cottage is extremely warm, even in the coldest of winters.

Liffs Cottage

lounging area of liffs

So named because of the view of Liffs Hill two miles away.

This cottage, like its adjoining neighbour, Dale View, fronts on to a grassed area and beyond are fields, dales and rolling hills, (accessible via a squeeze stile near the adjacent off road-parking area).

This cottage also has a partly exposed old beam but has the more conventional layout of lounge/kitchen on the ground floor and the two bedrooms and a fully equipped bathroom (full-sized bath with shower over the bath) on the first floor. This cottage also has a second TV in the twin bedroom.

Please bear in mind that electricity and linen are included (and some logs in The Dairy)

No pets are permitted, nor smoking in the cottages themselves

The Area

We have a small wood and just 12 acres of pasture land. On two of the fields our two horses and a few sheep graze. A third field is for hay, and the fourth is a wild flower meadow forming part of a larger nature reserve managed by English Nature. The reserve runs through Biggin Dale and after one and a half miles it reaches the famous River Dove near the meeting point of Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale.

The walk down Wolfscote Dale beside the River Dove eventually leads you to the most famous dale of the Peak, Dovedale. The Dove and Dovedale are renowned for their beauty. You will discover sheer pinnacles of rock, lions heads, caves and more.

The cottages are situated amongst gloriously rolling countryside with attractive views down various dales. We are located between the highly popular village of Hartington and its smaller, quieter neighbour, Biggin. (A large part of the television series Peak Practice was filmed in Hartington (with a smaller amount in Biggin) but traditionally the village has perhaps been more highly regarded however for its famous cheese factory and shop, duck pond and as a start for a number of walks of varying lengths).

We are within easy reach of many splendid historic houses. Chatsworth House is the spectacular home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire set in a magnificent deer park and boasting activities for all the family. Haddon Hallis a Jacobean mansion that has been scarcely altered since its building. Calke Abbey houses the collected paraphernalia of centuries of hoarding and is preserved in its unique 'as found' state by the National Trust.

You may also choose to visit Hardwick Hall, Lyme Hall or Kedleston - all within easy reach

We are centrally located to visit the market towns of Ashbourne, Leek, Buxton, Ashbourne, Bakewell and Matlock - each having something special to offer.

Ashbourne is a lovely market town with a good range of shops, art shops, antique shops etc. Buxton has fine Victorian and Edwardian buildings, a fine park and a range of collectors fairs in the Pavilion Gardens or entertainment in the newly restored Opera House. Bakewell is, of course, home of the Bakewell Pudding and well worth exploring.

The former spa town of Matlock has a lot to offer and the spectacular location of Matlock Bath is the setting for a mining museum, cable car rides, show caves etc.

Nestling in the hollows of the Peak Park are numerous villages well worth a visit and offering something special to the visitor.

The varied landscape of the Peak District makes it ideal for the walker, the cyclist or for those seeking more adventurous pursuits. There are opportunities for climbing, caving, Watersports, hangliding, mountain biking etc.

Numerous footpaths and bridle ways are on our doorstep and offer unrivalled walking in the best part of the White Peak. The highly popular Tissington Trail, which runs for 17 miles, is used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and is less than 1 mile from us.

Two further trails, the High Peak Trail and the Manifold Valley Trail (both of similar distance), are within 3 miles. These three tracks are ideal for family cycling as is the network of quiet minor roads leading off at various places from the trails.

Family attractions that you might consider are the theme parks of Alton Towers or the American Adventure. There is the National Tramway Museum at Crich, The National Stone Museum and Arkwright Mill at Cromford - so many things to list that you will appreciate the range of information we provide in our cottages to help you make the most of your visit to this wonderful area!
