The Pele Tower is not just holiday accommodation in Northumberland - It is holiday accommodation within a part of the very history of Northumberland:- Built around 1350 as a fortified house when these lands were far less peaceful than today's tranquillity suggests, Whitton Tower was part of the border defences against the ravaging bands of raiders that have become known as the Border Reivers.
The county is also rich in other historical remains, with more castles and fortifications than any other English county.
There are extensive Roman settlements and camps including the fascinating Hardian's Wall.
National Trust properties such as Brinkburn Priory, Wallington Hall and Cragside House are all within a few minutes journey.
Signs of even earlier habitation can be seen on the nearby Simonside Hills which tower above Rothbury. Where can be found sites of prehistoric habitation and the enigmatic rock art known as "Cup & Ring" markings.
