Self catering at Orchard House, Applethwaite.
Applethwaite is a sleepy little hamlet only one mile from Keswick. We have three houses here, one sleeping twelve, the other two sleeping eight.
With only a few dozen houses,
Applethwaite is only a mile and a half from Keswick and is the most sought-after
village, around Keswick. The village is in a sleepy little hamlet,
more reminiscent of Madeira than England, with hens, ducks, goats and sheep
wandering over the lane. And the lane isn't going anywhere else; the main road
by-passed Applethwaite long before bypasses were thought of. So children and
pets are pretty free to wander. Beside the lane you will see gardens with blooming
azaleas, rhododendron, every king of shrub hugging the hillside. Streams cascade
down Skiddaw on their way to the River Derwent, and tumble merrily beside the
road and farmsteads.
Derwent Lea

Derwent Lea is surrounded by a lovely garden, in which children and pets can play in safety.
The lounge:- looks out
at the wonderful view, and is comfortably furnished with a coal fire, colour
television and video.
The fitted kitchen:-
is well equipped, with built-in electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher,
fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble drier and of course all the usual
kitchen equipment.
The dining room:-
shares the fabulous view, and eight of you can eat here in comfort.
Upstairs:- there are
four bedrooms. The master bedroom has a double bed and again looks out on that
view. There is also another room with a double bed. The third room has twin beds
and the fourth, a set of full sized bunks.
Sheets and duvets are provided throughout, but you do need to bring your own
towels.
The bathroom:-
features bath, shower, washbasin and WC and a very useful airing cupboard. A
second washroom downstairs has a WC and washbasin.
There are also a cot, high chair and iron.
Heating:- Oil
fired central heating keeps the whole house snug even in deepest Winter. The
price includes oil, electricity, coal and linen.
Orchard House
The house itself offers
accommodation for up to eight people, ideal for two families sharing or for
having a holiday with the grandparents. The kitchen is lovely and the 20 foot
dining room with the Victorian fireplace. The sitting room has a Tv and
with a roaring coal fire if you like (coal provided). Sun lounge and patio.
Upstairs:- there's plenty of space for all. Lying in
the double bed in the master bedroom, with windows to south and west, looking
out over the fabulous view guarantees a good start to any day. The other three
bedrooms have twin beds. Two bathrooms give you the option of bath or shower
plus a downstairs toilet.
The kitchen:- has all the usual equipment, including dishwasher, microwave, and electric cooker plus an oil-fired AGA. Oil-fired central heating keeps the house snug even in mid-winter. Sheets and blankets are provided, but you do need to bring your own towels and tea-towels. There is a cot, iron and ironing board, washing machine/tumble drier.
The Orchard Barn
The barn was specially converted in 1990
for holiday use, and can sleep up to ten adults plus two children. Great for
family get-together or for parties of walkers and friends! Here you can really
enjoy each other’s company in the middle of lovely countryside, but with the
delights of Keswick just 2 miles away. The heart of the accommodation is the
superb lounge with its coal fire for those cooler nights (coal provided) and the
separate kitchen and dining area, all twenty feet square of it, with patio
windows looking out due South over that magnificent view. Here there’s plenty of
room to play games together, chat, watch the television (one in each room) or a
video, or enjoy each other’s company over a leisurely meal. Outside on the patio
is a great place to relax after a hard day out on the fells with a drink and a
snack to watch the sun go down over Bassenthwaite Lake.
The three bedrooms:-
on the first floor share a shower room and all have built
in wardrobes. One has a double bed, one is twin bedded, and the smallest has a
set of 6 ft. bunks, which are really only suitable for children. Upstairs again
to the top floor brings three more bedrooms, a double and two twins, with a very
pleasant bathroom. All the rooms up here have Velux roof windows. Bedding in the
Barn is sheets and duvets, all provided, although you need to bring
your own towels.
The kitchen area:- has all home comforts, including dishwasher, microwave, electric cooker, fridge etc. A separate utility room houses the washing machine, tumble drier and freezer. There is also a cot, an iron and an ironing board. Heating is by electric storage heaters, with ancillary electric fires, and the coal fire in the lounge.
