The Lunga Estate is a country coastal estate which has been in the MacDougall family for over 300 years. You can either rent a self catering flat in the house or in one of our converted stone built and slated traditional estate cottages with open fires, Or you can come as a guest and stay in the mansion for B&B in lovely old traditional rooms, full of antique furniture.

Lunga is a fine old Scottish country house (originally a 16th century Tower House), castellated, turreted, set on green lawns amidst tangled woodland.

 It looks out upon the sea, the waters of the Firth of Lorne and the Sound of Jura are just five hundred metres away.

These are available for Bed and breakfast guests, or as extra rooms with a self catering flat.

Self Catering Accommodation:-  All the self catering flats and cottages  can be rented as Bed and breakfast for a group or the whole house can be rented for Conferences, Weddings, or other occasions

Coachman's Cottage - Sleeps 4/6

This stone slated cottage is on the south side of the courtyard adjacent to Lunga. it looks over the garden or into the sheltered courtyard.

The living room, a large pine lined room with ranch style fireplace, has so me of the old coaching equipment still on the walls. the wood fire helps to heat the water. There is a studio couch as well as a large leather sofa, arm chairs, desk table and chairs.


The Kitchen has room for six to dine around the table. As well as the usual equipment there is a large dresser with room for pets below and a large deep freeze. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. the smaller room is a double and the larger is a twin room with room for an extra bed. It has a wash basin. the little bathroom also has a venerable antique bath. in the passage are a washing ma chine, a dryer and a small airing cupboard.
 

Dail Cottage - Sleeps 6

This detached stone and slated cottage, 250 metres north of Lunga and adjacent to the stables looks south over the park and west to the sheltered bay. There is a sheltered garden with a bit of mown lawn.

The living room is a long narrow room with a big open fire at one end, there are sofa, armchairs, desk, bookcase, table and chairs.
The kitchen is open plan, off the living room. It is well equipped and has a microwave and breakfast bar.
The downstairs bedroom is double/twin with a small dressing table and a chest of drawers and wardrobe.
The bathroom next door has a vanitory unit and a shower as well as a bath. there is a washing machine and dryer in the alcove outside the bathroom door.
Two bedrooms upstairs are small. They are both double/twin, and have wardrobes and a chest of drawers.


Fillans Cottage - Sleeps 6

Just like Dail Cottage but 60ft to the east this cottage has a front porch, useful for oilskins and logs.

This living room appears larger as the stair is open plan and the washing ma chine and dryer are in the kitchen area, The kitchen is similarly equipped but the breakfast bar area is larger and includes a piano.

The downstairs bedroom is double/twin but small with just room for wardrobe and chest of drawers.
The bathroom adjacent has bath basin and WC but no shower.
The two upstairs bedrooms are similar but there is more space on the landing for a cot.
 


The Old Schoolhouse - Sleeps 8/10

The Old Schoolhouse

It was originally built in 1828.

The upper floor has a master bedroom, with en-suite bathroom, three other twin or double bedrooms and a family bathroom with large bath and shower. There is also a separate toilet and a laundry area with washing machine and tumble dryer.

Downstairs the front hall leads to both the kitchen and a large living room. It also leads to a downstairs toilet and shower room and through to further room which can be either a fifth twin/double bedroom or sitting room. This room and the master bedroom are good size rooms with the ability to take an extra bed or cot. The other three bedrooms do just have room for beds convertible as twin or double.  Each room can have a TV and a telephone. The downstairs bedroom has a French door to outside.

The Living room leads to a conservatory, double glazed, with heated marble floor. The living room is more of a farmhouse kitchen. It has a Franklin stove open fire at one end, with easy chairs and an ancient oak settle round it. There is also a writing desk and a bank of shelves with music centre and plans for computer run media centre with home cinema.

The kitchen has double sinks, two dishwashers, an American fridge/freezer with cool water and chopped ice in the door. The cooker is a six burner double oven Range master, with halogen top. Apart from that it is simply equipped, a farmhouse kitchen for country meals. 

Connected to the house is an old stone barn, now converted to a garage or play room.

The house faces south, across the Ardfern road, to the sea, with a small garden in front. Behind there is a larger garden divided by a track which provides parking for several cars. On the house side a 50 herbaceous border is being developed and there is both a flagged terrace and a grass area with garden furniture for outdoor living. Beyond the track is a larger lawn, usable for ball games or rough croquet. From the front of the house, across the road is a narrow extension of the garden which leads to the seashore. 

Tower Flat - Sleeps 8/10

On two floors above the Victorian part of the house, this flat has some fine rooms and spectacular views of sunsets over the Corryvreckan whirlpool. The flat is split over two levels and has 3 double/twin bedrooms and a double bedroom and can sleep two people in the sitting room (island room) if required.

Three rooms lead off the entrance hall, to the right is Island Room, an elegant drawing room with bathroom. On the left of the entrance hall is a s mall well equipped kitchen and the Garden Room, a double/twin bedroom with en-suite shower room

The Upper level has three bedrooms Mortimer Room ( with spectacular views over the sea ) is a double/ twin bedroom and Long Room also a double/twin bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. The third bedroom, Liddel Room, is a small romantic double with an en-suite shower room

 Batchelor Flat - Sleeps 10

This spacious flat on the second floor is in the oldest part of the house. It is most suited to a group of young people or a large family.

 The rooms a re sizeable but have deep coomb's and odd angles and levels. The small Jacobean windows give a jewel like quality to the vista of islands. Most rooms also have big velux roof lights, filling them with sunlight. There are 4 double/twin rooms and the sitting room can sleep 2 people if required

Spencer Flat - Sleeps 2/4

This first floor flat has wide views over Mull and Jura, the yachts sailing in the Sound of Shuna and the horses in the Park below.  Spencer Flat - Sleeps 2/4

Spencer has a double/twin bedroom and can sleep 2 in the sitting room if required

Spencer Room is the 18th century ladies drawing-room. It has a nice marble fireplace and period cornices. Leading off the entrance hall is the kitchen and bathroom. At the end of a small passage leading off the entrance hall is Raray Room a double/twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom and views from the windows look over the islands.

Stewart Flat - Sleeps 2/4

This one bedroom flat has slightly less view but great sunsets. The Scot Room ( formerly Smoking Room) can sleep 2 people if required. Sitting room, the Gentlemen's Smoking Room, with an open fire and bathroom. Kitchen has usual equipment.

Leading off a small passage is Stewart Room, a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom: double bed is of baronial proportions and studio bed.

Notes on all accommodations:- Please note: All our beds, described as twin/double, are 2ft 6in firm edge single beds which bolt together and have a mattress amalgamating cover, to make a 5ft double bed. Just ask to have the beds arranged to your requirements. Each flat or cottage has its own front door key.

  1. Electricity: Electricity in self catering is charged at HE contract tariff April 06 - 10.2p per unit- in Lunga House, and by 1 coin meter elsewhere.
     
  2. Linen: Linen is not provided unless specifically ordered as an extra £5.50 per person and must be ordered in advance, except for duvet covers which are supplied freshly laundered each week.
     
  3. Groceries: We can arrange for groceries, fresh milk, bread etc to be delivered from Ardfern Village Store or Craobh prior to your arrival if you send us a list.
     
  4. Logs: There is an initial supply of sticks and logs or coal to start the fire, and will be charged at 6.00 if used. Additional logs can b e ordered at £5.50 per barrow, .
     
  5. Cots: Cot hire @ 4.00 per week.
  6. Rubbish: Free black plastic sacks are provided for rubbish, These can be deposited for disposal in the bin area to the left of the back door at Lunga.
     
  7. Dinghy hire from £24.00 per day
  8. Dinners from £18.50
  9. Deposit 25% deposit required with booking

All occupants have the use of Lunga Hall

A common sitting-room with open fire, lots of books and games.

The Great Drawing Room:- A place for dances reels and party games. The room has a Bluther baby-grand piano, a ping pong table, a small snooker table and a selection of old family games ie: puff football, shove hapenny etc. There is equipment for archery, badminton and croquet which are played in the garden.

We have six hill lochs available for trout fishing. A 14ft clinker rowing dinghy a 4hp outboard engine. A heron sailing dinghy, are available for hire, but should be booked in advance. We have a 27ft motor cruiser available for fishing, diving expeditions exploring the surrounding islands
NB: Not all water equipment always available. Please let us know if you have any special requirements and we will do our best to help.

Attractions of the Area

The local area offers activities to suit many tastes.

Closer to hand, heading out along the peninsula from Ardfern, there is the chapel at Kilmharee, with its graves of chieftains and crusading knights ; beyond this, on the way to Craignish Point, is Craignish castle where it is possible to glimpse the private garden, designed by Osgood Mackenzie.

For the more active, there are riding stables just 200m north of the house.  The stables have an all weather mange and a park which is frequently used for jumping or dressage, as well as a cross-country course. Away from dry land, the Craignish boat club in the local village of Ardfern offers children the chance to learn sailing or canoeing. Yacht chartering is available from the two busy local marinas at Ardfern and Craobh Haven as well as boat trips to the nearby islands.

For golfers, both Oban and Lochgilphead have courses.  Fishing is available in the Lunga estate's six hill lochs; in the sea, while on boat trips from Ardfern or Craobh or, with a permit, in the nearby Loch Awe. 

Directions to Lunga

Lunga is just south of Craobh Haven Village. 26 miles south of Oban and 16 miles north of Lochgilphead overlooking the islands of the Inner Hebrides

Directions through Glasgow and from the south:- Follow signs for M8 or Erskine Bridge and Glasgow Airport. Pass the airport and cross the Erskine Bridge (Toll bridge) and follow signs for A82 'Loch Lomond', 'Arrochar', at Tarbet take A83 to 'Inveraray' and 'Lochgilphead'.

At Lochgilphead take the A816 North towards Oban

Turn left at the Craobh Haven Village signs 2 Miles north of the Ardfern turn off.
Before turning into the village of Craobh Haven take a left turn towards the riding stables and Lunga is 200 yards further on.
